Istanbul is the city where two continents meet through the narrow Bosphorus Strait. Millions of tourists come to see the stunning scenery and architecture that Turkey's largest city has to offer. From the historic Sultanahmet district to the majestic Hagia Sophia Mosque, these areas have much to offer. But not all journeys end without incident...
While most tourists won't face any problems during their stay, there are a few things to avoid in Istanbul. From common tourist scams found in most major cities to things you should never do, there are things to avoid when exploring this wonderful Turkish city.
Do not take taxi without a meter
One of the most important things to avoid in Istanbul is taking an unmetered or unlicensed taxi. Hiring a taxi is a cheap and easy way to get around the city, but it can be expensive if you don't choose your ride wisely.
It is not uncommon to come across illegal taxis in Istanbul. In most cases, they are more expensive than regular taxis. Drivers may also insist on agreeing on a price in advance, hoping you don't know the applicable rate, they provide a service that is much more expensive than the meter actually indicates. So if you don't want to overpay, never follow anyone who promises to take you to a cheap taxi. Also, make sure to only use yellow taxis with visible signs on the roof.
Do not make fun of Turkish national items
Turkish people are renowned for their friendliness and kindness. You can even receive invitations from strangers to a family lunch or dinner. However, there are particular lines you should stay inside when interacting with Istanbul's citizens.
There is no doubt that one is mocking Turkish emblems. The flag holds a special place in the hearts of the locals. Any jokes or improper conduct involving it, could cause a great offence to someone.
Additionally, discussing local politicians, religious beliefs, and other national symbols could potentially offend Turks, therefore it is best to steer clear of them entirely.
Do not stay in Tarlabaşı district
Istanbul is typically a safe city for travelers, but there are several places you should stay away from. While many of the risky areas are tucked away from the famous tourist destinations, the Tarlabaşı neighborhood is just a few blocks from Taksim Square and Istiklal Street.
Despite Tarlabaşı's reputation as one of the city's most hazardous neighborhoods, it has changed recently and isn't as dangerous as it formerly was. However, it's still typical to run into drug traffickers when exploring this notorious neighborhood, so if you decide to go, we advise going during the day and exercising extreme caution.
Keep your valuable items hidden
As Istanbul one of the metropolitans of the world, its over populated novadays, so the tourist areas and public transportation are always crowded.
Its always better to keep your wallet, phone, jewelleries etc. hidden in public to avoid drawing attention of malicious people.
Like the all other big cities in the world, being careful and aware of the scams while traveling is essential in Istanbul, with some care you will have a wonderful holiday in this magical city.
